Scandinavian Interior Design Inspiration

If we take the time to consider some of the most memorable home decor trends of the 21st century so far, we can safely say that the Scandinavian trend of neutral colour palettes, natural materials and minimalism will top the list. The cool Scandinavian influence on interior design trends has been difficult to ignore, and many of the designer lighting brands that we stock here at Dusk Lighting are infusing their lighting designs with a little Scandinavian interior design inspiration. Today we are embracing this trend and showing you our favourite lights that would be right at home with a Nordic interior design setting.

What is Scandinavian interior design?

Before we go any further and launch into the perfect Scandinavian inspired lighting designs, let’s take a look at what Scandinavian interior design actually is. The Nordic influenced theme is one of freshness, clean lines, simplicity and lightness, with wooden and copper elements giving that natural feel. It’s a hugely popular homeware and interior design trend that shows no sign of going out of fashion!

We’re sure that you’ll have heard of the buzzword ‘hygge’ which is simply the Danish word for the feeling of contentment and happiness. Many people link the hygge sensation with feeling cosy at home, and the popularity of soft furnishings, faux fur and candles confidently define the perfect hygge environment at home. You can find out more in our Hygge blog post!

Scandi design lights

A great way to experiment with the popular Scandinavian homeware trend is to introduce some Nordic inspired design into your home with lighting. Considering geometric lampshades, white desk lamps, copper lights and a combination of materials, all of these components in our designer lights will adhere to the Scandi style.

Simple lines and shapes are a staple design element related to this particular interior design trend, and an easy way to incorporate it into your home is with some geometric lampshades! Many geometric lights have an exposed light bulb, meaning you can also install a decorative light bulb that can be seen through the wire of the lampshade for a really modern look. The geometric pendants from the Embleton range by EGLO are a fantastic option with the choice of black, steel copper and antique copper finishes.

Be sure to consider a decorative light bulb from our excellent range of various light bulb styles.

White lamps

A white lamp can be the perfect calming addition to a bedside table which makes a Scandinavian style lamp an ideal choice for your bedroom lighting. You’ll find with some table lamps and pendant lights, two trends will blend into one, like with the beautiful geometric patterned base of the white table lamp from Dar Lighting and the wall light from Original BTC. There’s also a mix of Scandinavian interior design elements with the white and copper EGLO lamp shade which is a sophisticated take on the trend. We also love the unique look of the EGLO Rondo small white opal glass globe pendant lights which can be installed in multiples for a visually pleasing effect, or set up solo for an understated lounge lighting option.

White lampshades are a really versatile lighting option for any room in the house, and even work well as attractive bathroom lighting solutions due to the ‘fresh’ look.

As the classic Scandi home interior look is all about neutrals (think: grey, white and black colour palette), there’s scope for introducing muted accent colours, and a favourite hue is copper. Copper lights or copper coloured lampshades are a subtle way of adding colour to a room for those who wish to stay true to the Nordic neutrals. When it comes to kitchen lighting, we think that copper lights work perfectly as an impressive breakfast bar lighting option, or as simple pendants in the form of multiple hanging ceiling lights or on a strip light fitting. Opt for polished copper for a satisfying shine, or an antique copper for a more rustic edge.

You could coordinate copper lighting with other copper accessories for a pleasingly organised finish to a room. For the kitchen this could mean opting for copper utensil holder, tea and coffee caddies and even a copper kettle!

Natural materials

A more recent interior design trend that is able to work seamlessly alongside the much loved Scandinavian home influence is the use of natural materials. Whether it’s real or fake, a blend of natural materials such as cork, concrete, rope and wood needs to look authentic to be enjoyed fully. If you’re keen to add some Scandi style to your living room, we have some great lounge lighting which displays the natural materials element wonderfully. For a bold table lamp that incorporates two naturally occurring materials, consider the EGLO Tarega concrete and wood table lamp with its concrete and light wood finish base. This would add an urban look to a lounge to suit all ends of the Scandinavian inspired home spectrum.

For those who would like to break up the clean lines and strict colour palette that Scandinavian interior design is known for, the inclusion of natural materials will be perfect for adding some ‘life’ into a room.

Whether you’re a Scandi style afficionado or a newbie to the exciting homeware and decor trend, our suggestions will have hopefully inspired you with their simplistic yet beautiful designs.
