IP Rating & Bathroom Zones Explained
To make bathroom lighting regulations easier to understand, bathrooms are divided into three safety zones: Zone 0, Zone 1 and Zone 2. Each zone has a minimum IP rating, which shows how well a light fitting is protected against water and dust. Any light installed in a zone must meet or exceed the required IP rating for that area.

WHAT ARE THE ZONES?
In the context of bathroom lighting in the UK, bathroom zones are a set of safety guidelines that determine where light fittings can be installed and what level of protection they must have against moisture. Because bathrooms combine electricity with water, lighting needs to be carefully specified depending on its proximity to showers, baths, and areas of splashing or steam. These zones help ensure that any lighting used is appropriately rated for its location, with higher IP-rated fittings required closer to water sources and less stringent requirements further away.
The 3 bathroom zones:
ZONE 0 (IP67 RECOMMENDED) Inside the bath or shower. Any Fittings used here must be SELV (max 12V) and have a minimum rating of IPX7 (protected against immersion in water).
ZONE 1 (IP65 RECOMMENDED) Above the bath or shower to a height of 2.25m. A minimum rating of IPX4 is required. *(See note 1)
ZONE 2 (IP44 RECOMMENDED) The area stretching to 0.6m outside the bath or shower and above the bath or shower if over 2.25. An IP rating of at least IPX4 is required. *(See note 1)
OUTSIDE ZONES (IP NOT ESSENTIAL) Anywhere outside zones 0, 1 & 2. Where water jets are not to be used for cleaning purposes, the general rules of BS7671 apply. *(See note 1) NOTES In zones 1 & 2, if there are is a likelihood of water jets being used for cleaning purposes, a minimum of IPX5 is required In zones 1 & 2, SELV or 240V luminaires may be used (subject to IP rating) The above information is intended as a guide only. NOTES
1. In zones 1 & 2, if there are is a likelihood of water jets being used for cleaning purposes, a minimum of IPX5 is required.

What is an IP Rating?
IP stands for Ingress Protection and indicates how well a light fitting is protected against water and solid objects. In bathrooms, the most important part of the IP rating is the second digit, which relates to water resistance.
Bathroom lighting is often exposed to splashes, steam and moisture, so fittings installed near baths and showers must have a suitable IP rating to ensure they are safe to use. For example, an IP44-rated fitting is protected against water splashes, while IP65 offers a higher level of protection
against water jets. In areas with direct exposure to water, a higher IP rating may be required depending on the bathroom zone.
The appropriate IP rating for a light fitting will depend on where it is being installed within the bathroom, helping to ensure both safety and compliance with current regulations.
